Celebrating the career and contributions of UCC's Alan Dobson to MARBLES

MARBLES joins colleagues from our partner University College Cork (UCC) and the wider research community in celebrating the career of Professor Alan Dobson, which has been defined by scientific excellence, generous mentorship and a deep commitment to advancing marine and environmental microbiology.

Alan’s impact extends far beyond the lectures he delivered or the research papers he authored. Throughout his career, he has shaped minds, challenged assumptions and inspired generations of students and researchers to think critically, ask deeper questions and pursue their work with integrity and curiosity.

Within MARBLES, Alan has played a pivotal role leading Work Package 1 (WP1): Novel Bio‑Resources and Improved Approaches to Biodiversity Mining. Under his guidance, WP1 has advanced innovative approaches to exploring marine microbiomes, identifying new bio‑resources and deepening our understanding of the biodiversity that underpins sustainable blue innovation. His scientific insight and collaborative spirit have played an integral part to shaping the direction and ambition of MARBLES.

Those who have had the privilege of working with Alan, whether within MARBLES, at UCC, or across the international research community, will remember not only his expertise but also his kindness, generosity with his time and unwavering commitment to academic rigour.

As he begins this new chapter, MARBLES extends its sincere gratitude for his leadership, partnership and friendship. We wish Alan a very happy retirement and we warmly thank him for everything he has contributed to MARBLES.
